Mr David N Townshend FRCS(Orth)

Consultant Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgeon

 

I was born in Edinburgh and graduated from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne in 1997. After a research fellowship in New Zealand I returned to the North East for Higher Surgical Training. In 2009 I undertook a years specialist fellowship in Reconstructive Foot and Ankle surgery at the University of Brtish Columbia, Vancouver, Canada. I have been a Consultant at the Northumbria NHS Healthcare Trust since 2010 offering a specialist foot and ankle practice. 

 

can offer expertise in all aspects of foot and ankle surgery including simple forefoot surgeries (eg bunions and hammer toes), minimally invasive foot surgery, sports foot and ankle surgery, ankle arthritis including arthroscopic ankle fusion, total ankle replacement and revision (re-do) total ankle replacement.

I am actively involved in the foot and ankle and research communities. I was recently appointed as an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne. I am an elected member of the Scientific Committee of the British Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society, Clinical Director of Research and Development and lead for Orthopaedic Clinical Studies Northumbria NHS Trust. My research interests include ankle arthritis, ankle joint replacement and day case surgery.

 

I am married to Jen, a Respiratory Paediatrician and have two young children. When I am not fixing feet, teaching the next generation how to fix feet or researching I enjoy spending time with my family, cycling, skiing and trying to stand up paddle board.
